Listen. Understand. Plan together.

Support for living and moving with pain

Arthritis and persistent pain can affect everyday tasks, work, sleep and the things you enjoy. We take time to understand your experience and agree on a plan that fits your health, priorities and current abilities.

Persistent pain, sometimes called chronic pain, generally means pain lasting more than three months or beyond the expected healing time. Pain is real, and it can be influenced by several factors. Your assessment helps us understand what support may be useful for you.

What brings people to physiotherapy

Care for joint symptoms and ongoing pain

The right approach depends on your condition, symptoms and medical history. We can assess whether physiotherapy is suitable and discuss other care when needed.

Osteoarthritis

Support for hip, knee and other joint osteoarthritis, with a focus on movement, strength and everyday function.

Inflammatory arthritis

Exercise and movement support for people with conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, alongside care from their GP or rheumatologist.

Persistent musculoskeletal pain

Assessment and rehabilitation for ongoing back, neck, joint or limb pain that affects daily activities.

Difficulty getting active

Help finding a manageable starting point when stiffness, pain or concern about movement makes activity difficult.

New joint swelling, prolonged morning stiffness or a change in your usual symptoms may need medical assessment. Inflammatory arthritis requires medical management as well as support for movement and function.

Your experience matters

Start with a clearer understanding

We discuss your symptoms, health history, previous treatment and goals, then assess relevant movement, strength and everyday tasks. We may also ask about sleep, fatigue, work demands and how pain affects your wellbeing.

We explain our findings, discuss the options and agree on practical next steps. If symptoms suggest another condition or a need for further investigation, we will recommend appropriate medical review.

A practical, individual plan

Build skills for everyday movement

Tailored exercise and activity

Your plan may include strength, mobility, balance or general fitness work. We choose a manageable starting level and adjust activities according to your condition, response and goals. Progression is individual, with room to adapt during flares or changes in health.

Pacing and planning

Pacing can help you spread tasks across the day, vary activities and plan breaks. Together, we can explore a routine that supports what matters to you and reduces the pattern of doing too much followed by prolonged recovery.

Education and self-management

Clear explanations can help you make informed choices about movement and symptom management. We discuss how to adjust activities, respond to flares and recognise changes that need reassessment.

Goals and regular review

Goals might include walking to the shops, managing stairs, gardening or returning to a favourite activity. We review changes in symptoms, function and confidence, then adjust the plan together.

Working with your healthcare team

Support that connects with your wider care

Arthritis and persistent pain sometimes benefit from several types of care. With your agreement, we can work alongside your GP, rheumatologist, pain specialist or other treating professionals. Where appropriate, we may recommend support from an occupational therapist, exercise physiologist, dietitian or psychologist with experience in pain care.

Your medical team manages medicines and condition-specific treatment. Physiotherapy can contribute through assessment, movement, education and rehabilitation.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

View all FAQs

Can physiotherapy help with arthritis?

Physiotherapy can help you manage symptoms and work on strength, mobility and daily activities. Exercise and advice are tailored to the type of arthritis and your current needs. If you have inflammatory arthritis, your GP or rheumatologist remains important for medical treatment and monitoring.

Can I exercise when I have pain?

For many people with arthritis or persistent pain, appropriately tailored activity is an important part of care. We assess your situation and agree on a manageable starting point, how to adjust the activity and when to seek review. Tell us about any new symptoms or a marked increase in symptoms after activity.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on your condition, goals, other health needs and response to the plan. After assessment, your physiotherapist will discuss a suitable approach and review whether ongoing appointments are useful.

Do I need a GP referral?

You can generally book a private physiotherapy appointment without a GP referral. A GP review may still be appropriate for new, unexplained or changing symptoms. Please bring any relevant referrals or reports you already have.
