Your fitting

What the appointment may include

Your appointment is focused on confirming the appropriate pathway, fitting the device correctly and making sure you understand how to use it safely.

01

Assessment or referral review

We review the injury, relevant diagnosis or referral, symptoms, swelling, skin, circulation and other safety factors.

02

Sizing and adjustment

The boot is sized and adjusted with attention to position, pressure areas, comfort and stability.

03

Walking and device guidance

We explain the prescribed weight-bearing status, boot use, walking aid needs and practical precautions.

Important instructions

Weight-bearing, wear and follow-up

The instructions for wearing and using a CAM walker should follow your specific diagnosis and treatment plan rather than a generic schedule.

01

Weight-bearing

Do not assume you can fully weight-bear. Follow the instructions given for your specific injury. Crutches or another walking aid may be required.

02

Wear schedule

Whether the boot can be removed for sleep, hygiene or exercise depends on your diagnosis and plan. Follow the advice provided rather than generic internet instructions.

03

Review

Attend recommended follow-up. Changes in swelling or fit can alter pressure, comfort, walking and skin risk.

Safety information

Skin, circulation and urgent warning signs

Check regularly

  • Skin for rubbing, blisters or pressure areas
  • Toes for colour, warmth and swelling
  • Comfort and fit after swelling changes
  • Boot condition, straps and liner

Seek prompt clinical advice

Contact your treating team promptly for worsening pain, persistent numbness or tingling, loss of feeling, marked swelling, blue or pale toes, unusual coldness, skin breakdown or a boot that no longer fits safely.

Possible blood clot or emergency

Seek urgent medical care for new calf pain or swelling, warmth or redness.

Call 000 for chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, coughing blood, collapse or another medical emergency.

Driving

Do not drive if the boot or injury prevents safe control of the vehicle or an emergency stop. Obtain advice relevant to your injury and vehicle, and check insurer and licensing requirements before returning to driving.

Keeping the boot safe

Keep it dry unless your device instructions say otherwise. Do not alter the boot, add unapproved padding or change your prescribed weight-bearing status without advice.

Common questions

CAM walker boot FAQs

Do I need a referral?

Not always, but a diagnosis, referral or imaging may be needed depending on the injury. If the injury may be serious or the diagnosis is unclear, medical assessment can take priority.

How long will I need to wear the boot?

The timeframe depends on the injury, healing, medical plan and review findings. We cannot safely provide one standard duration or guarantee healing time.

Can I take the boot off to sleep or shower?

Only according to instructions for your injury. Some people must keep the boot on more consistently than others. Keep the device dry unless it is specifically designed for water exposure.

Will I need crutches?

Possibly. This depends on your prescribed weight-bearing status, balance, pain and walking safety. If crutches are supplied, they should be fitted and explained.

Can I drive while wearing the boot?

Do not drive unless you can safely and legally control the vehicle and have clarified relevant clinical, licensing and insurance considerations. A right-sided boot commonly prevents safe driving.

What if the boot feels too tight?

Check for swelling and pressure symptoms and follow the adjustment advice provided. Seek prompt advice for ongoing tightness, numbness, colour change, increasing pain or circulation concerns.
