Ankle pain: move towards a more confident step
Ankle pain may begin with a twist, develop during activity or keep returning when you walk on uneven ground. The useful question is not simply where it hurts, but what your ankle needs to manage the activities you want to do.
Physiotherapy can assess suitable musculoskeletal ankle problems and guide rehabilitation. A new injury may need medical assessment before exercise begins.
Before you book
Get urgent assessment when needed
Seek urgent medical care for severe pain, inability to walk, an obvious change in ankle shape or a snap with substantial difficulty using the leg. These signs can occur with an injury that should not be treated as a simple sprain. NHS: ankle pain
A rapidly swollen, hot or red ankle with fever also needs urgent medical assessment. Persistent unexplained symptoms, feeling generally unwell or a significant relevant medical history should be discussed with a doctor. Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust: foot and ankle pain
More than a sprain label
An ankle sprain involves injury to the supporting ligaments, often after rolling or twisting. Swelling, bruising and stiffness can follow. The severity varies, and not every painful ankle is a ligament injury. North Bristol NHS Trust: ankle injury rehabilitation
Tendon-related pain, joint symptoms and problems elsewhere in the leg can also affect how the ankle feels. Repeated episodes of giving way deserve assessment rather than assuming another few days of rest will solve the problem.
A plan matched to your daily demands
Assessment may include the injury history, walking, ankle movement, strength, balance and activities that reproduce your difficulty. Your goals might involve stairs, a standing job, hiking or changing direction on a sports field.
For an assessed uncomplicated sprain, rehabilitation usually progresses from comfortable movement and walking towards strength, balance and activity-specific tasks. A safe progression matters more than copying the most difficult exercise you can find. North Bristol NHS Trust: rehabilitation
Your physiotherapist can explain what to practise, how to judge the response and when the plan needs reviewing. Supportive measures may help comfort, but they do not replace rebuilding function where that is indicated.
Questions patients often ask
Can I keep walking?
That depends on the injury. Inability to walk after an injury is a reason for urgent assessment, not a prompt to force weight through the ankle. Once a suitable diagnosis is established, the plan can guide gradual activity.
Why does my ankle keep rolling?
Several factors can contribute. Assessment considers movement, strength, balance and the demands you place on the ankle rather than assuming one cause.
When can I return to sport?
Recovery varies. Rehabilitation should include the movements your sport requires, not only feeling comfortable at rest. North Bristol NHS Trust: return to activity
