Wrist and hand pain: support for the tasks that matter

Painful hands can make small tasks feel like big obstacles. Turning a key, preparing food, typing or holding a child may become difficult. A useful plan starts by understanding the symptoms, not simply labelling them “overuse”.

Physio Cure’s upper-limb assessment considers movement, strength, sensation and everyday demands. If a condition needs medical care or further investigation, physiotherapy should support that pathway rather than delay it. Our upper-limb approach

Seek urgent help for these warning signs

Get urgent medical assessment after significant injury, or for severe pain, a misshapen or unusually pale hand, sudden weakness, inability to move or hold objects, or loss of feeling. A hot, painful swelling with fever or feeling unwell also needs prompt attention. Do not wait for a routine appointment. Healthdirect wrist warning signs · NHS urgent wrist symptoms

Different symptoms need different answers

The wrist and hand contain many small joints, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Possible causes of pain include injury, tendon problems, arthritis and nerve compression. Swelling, stiffness, tingling and weaker grip help guide assessment, but overlapping symptoms make self-diagnosis unreliable. Healthdirect wrist pain

Some examples include:

  • A wrist sprain after a fall or twist. A fracture or more serious ligament injury can produce similar symptoms and may need medical assessment. Healthdirect sprained wrist
  • Thumb-side wrist pain, including De Quervain’s disease, which can make thumb movement and gripping uncomfortable. Several conditions can resemble it. Healthdirect De Quervain’s disease
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome, which can cause hand tingling, numbness, pain and grip difficulty, often at night. Worsening or persistent symptoms warrant medical review. NHS carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Joint-related pain and stiffness, including arthritis, or a symptomatic wrist lump. A new lump should not be assumed to be harmless without assessment. NHS wrist pain

What happens at an assessment?

Describe what you feel, where you feel it and what changed before it began. Bring relevant scan reports and any fracture or surgical instructions. It helps to identify a particular task you want to regain.

Assessment may look at movement, swelling, grip, hand function and nerve-related symptoms. The findings help determine whether rehabilitation is appropriate and whether other healthcare input is needed. Our assessment process

Rehabilitation that fits your diagnosis

Management may involve adapting uncomfortable tasks, rebuilding movement and gradually improving strength. For a sprain, the injury’s severity matters: some need protection or specialist treatment before exercise. Do not force movement or heavy loading through an injury that has not been assessed. Healthdirect sprained wrist

Practical changes can include breaking up repetitive work, reducing forceful gripping and trying tools that make tasks easier. Gentle movement may help mild stiffness, but advice should change if pain, swelling or nerve symptoms increase. NHS wrist self-care

A suitable splint may help selected conditions. For carpal tunnel symptoms, a night splint that keeps the wrist straight is one option; exercises alone should not be presented as a cure. Persistent or worsening symptoms may need other medical treatment. NHS carpal tunnel care

For De Quervain’s disease, a doctor may discuss options such as splinting or injection treatment. These are medical options to discuss, not services promised by this page. Healthdirect treatment options

Common questions

Is tingling just a tight muscle?

Not necessarily. Nerve compression can cause tingling and numbness. Persistent or worsening symptoms need assessment, particularly with weakness. NHS carpal tunnel syndrome

Will I need a scan?

That depends on the examination and suspected problem. Injury, persistent symptoms or diagnostic uncertainty may change whether imaging is useful. Healthdirect wrist assessment

Should I buy a brace now?

Ask which support suits the suspected condition and when to use it. A thumb-supporting splint and a wrist night splint serve different purposes. Healthdirect thumb-side pain · NHS wrist splint advice
