Cam Boot/Walker Fittings
Cam Boot
A CAM (controlled ankle motion) boot is an adjustable device limiting ankle and foot movement in order to protect the area whilst encouraging greater independence. Protecting these joints aims to prevent reinjury and promote recovery. The CAM boot is like a plaster cast but offers greater comfort and flexibility to be taken off. A standard CAM boot consists of a flexible liner for the foot to fit into and a rigid shell to support and protect the leg.
Indications For CAM Boots
Our physiotherapists will recommend a CAM boot if the presenting condition requires it, considering various factors such as the nature, location and severity of the injury. Typically, the main indications for CAM boots are injuries occurring in the ankle and foot such as:
- Fractures
- Post-operative immobilisation
- Ankle sprains
- Lisfranc injuries
- Soft tissue injuries (e.g. Achilles tear/rupture)
- Plantar fascia
- Metatarsalgia (pain under the balls of the forefoot)
Important considerations when wearing a cam boot
Several considerations (as written below) should be made when selecting and wearing a boot which are listed below. Please consult with our physiotherapists in Preston about any advice or recommendations when selecting a specific boot.
Selecting a boot
There are various considerations that go into selecting a CAM boot:
- Correct size
- Choosing between a short or long CAM boot

Walker
Mobility walkers guide movement to assist and provide additional support for people who experience problems with balance and stability. Additionally, walkers help with weight bearing by shifting the load of body weight to the walker, endurance and to build muscle strength and ability.
Indications for Walkers
Your physiotherapist will assess whether it is appropriate to fit you with a walker but common conditions that benefit from the use of a walker are:
- Arthritis
- Osteoporosis
- Multiple sclerosis
